SIOUX CITY – Connor Niles had a pair of touchdown receptions in the first quarter, leading Morningside to a 42-21 victory over William Penn in the season opener for both.
Niles had game-highs with nine receptions and 190 receiving yards, including a 63-yard TD to put the Mustangs on the board. Niles’ receiving yards total was the second highest in the NAIA through the first weekend of the new season.
The teams traded touchdowns on their opening drives. Niles’ touchdown was followed by a 71-yard scoring drive by William Penn capped by a 3-yard TD run by Jesse Cade.
But Morningside started to distance itself early, scoring touchdowns on the next two possessions and taking a 21-7 through the first quarter.
Morningside senior quarterback Trent Solsma was 20-for-30 passing on the afternoon for 329 yards and had no interceptions.
Each team had a back with a 100-yard rushing game. Arnijae Ponder picked up 155 yards and two touchdowns in the win for the Mustangs. William Penn’s Alex Crehan gained 113 yards for the Statesmen.
