FORT MADISON – It was a near sweep for the Warriors on the golf course Tuesday as both teams claimed victory at the Iowa Wesleyan Spring Tiger Classic, while Nicole Misner added an individual title to Waldorf’s trophy haul.
The Waldorf women’s golf team ran away with the team title at the Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course, besting host Iowa Wesleyan, 347 to 406, led by the one-two finish of Misner and teammate Seeret Brar.
On the men’s side, the team race was tighter but still went the Warriors way as Waldorf shot a 309 and edged out second-place Southeastern Community College (313) by four shots.
Manuel Zorrilla led the Waldorf men, coming up one shot short of a clean sweep for the Warriors as he finished tied for third with a 75, a shot back of co-individual leaders Colton Belloma of Southeastern and Curt Matheny of Westminster (Mo.), who each shot 74s.
Of course, the Warriors win on the men’s side was powered by consistent team play with four Waldorf players finishing in the Top 10.
Mitch Anderson tied for fifth with a 77, Joe Nordquist tied for seventh with a 78, and Cody Ails tied for ninth with a 79.
Jared Pheffer shot an 85 and tied for 26th, rounding out the Warrior men’s team scores.
The Waldorf women also had four Top-10 finishes, led by Misner’s victorious score of 81, and the runner-up finish of Brar with an 82.
Haleigh Biernacki was next for the Warriors with an 87, good for fifth, and Cassidy Blair shot a 97, which put her ninth overall.
Brandelle McGinn rounded out the Warrior women’s scores, carding a 105 to tie for 15th, while Katherine Johnson, playing as an individual, shot a 98 and tied for 10th for Waldorf.
Waldorf’s victorious day on the course came after a unique day of play Monday at Sheaffer Memorial Golf
Course, a co-ed match-play event against Iowa Wesleyan that also went the way of the Warriors, 69.5 to 38.5.
Waldorf’s Zorrilla and McGinn teamed up for a 10.5 to 7.5 victory over the Tigers’ Blake Forsythe and Claire Hanson, the Warriors’ Anderson and Brar scored a 12.5 to 5.5 win over Iowa Wesleyan’s Cam Mack and Darby Massner, and Waldorf’s Ails and Biernacki scored a 16.5 to 1.5 win over Mason Wills and Allie Massner of IW.
In the coaches match-up, Warrior coach Mark Clouse and Misner won 14 to 4 over the Tigers’ Austin Willis and coach Kurt Moon, while the Warriors other two duos of Nordquist and Johnson, and Pheffer and Blair, each lost close battles, 8 to 10.
Next up for the Warrior golf team is the Laker Invitational next Monday in Okoboji, Iowa.
