FOREST CITY – A contender for the league title the last two seasons, the Waldorf football team once again is expected to be in the running for the North Star Athletic Association crown this fall.
The NSAA announced its 2019 Dacotah Bank/NSAA Football Coaches’ Preseason Poll on Monday and the Warriors were picked to finish third, just a few slim points behind reigning champion and No. 8-ranked Dickinson State.
The Blue Hawks earned 32 points in the poll and four first-place votes from the NSAA coaches and edged out second-place Valley City State, which was the No. 2 pick with 29 points and one first-place vote.
Waldorf, the only NSAA team to beat the Blue Hawks in league play over the last three seasons, was picked to finish third with 27 points, as the top three were tightly grouped in the coaches’ poll. The Warriors finished second in the NSAA standings the last two seasons.
Dakota State was picked to finish fourth with 21 points, and one first-place vote, followed by Presentation in fifth with 11 points, and Mayville State in sixth with seven points.
Waldorf opens the 2019 season at home on Aug. 31 hosting Briar Cliff at 6 p.m. for Community Night. The Warriors open NSAA play at league favorite Dickinson State on Sept. 28.
