WAVERLY – Wartburg women’s basketball defeated Edgewood College 60-51 in the its season opener Sunday, Jan. 3 behind sophomore guard Macy Harris’ team-high 14 points. The Knights improved to 4-0 all-time against the Eagles and are 10-5 in season openers under head coach Bob Amsberry including seven straight victories.
The Orange and Black (1-0, 0-0 A-R-C) will continue its non-conference schedule on Friday, Jan. 8 against North Central University (6-0, 0-0 UMAC) with tip-off set for 5 p.m. inside Levick Arena.
In addition to Harris, senior forward Payton Draper and freshman guard Britney Young both scored in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Senior guard Ally Conrad was a force on the glass, ripping down a team-high 12 rebounds in addition to her eight points and team-best three assists. Wartburg finished the game 15-of-21 from the free-throw line compared to the Eagles’ 2-of-5. The Knights concluded the contest 19-of-60 from the field and 7-of-29 from behind the arc.
Both squads got out to a blistering start in the first quarter, which finished 23-22 in favor of Edgewood. However, the Knights battled back in the second to take a 34-30 lead at the break. Each team began the second half with a bit of a dry spell as the quarter ended with 13 total points. Wartburg finished the contest on a 14-5 run, which was bolstered by a 75 percent shooting percentage from the charity stripe and 50 percent from the field.
The Orange and Black allowed only one player to reach double figures in the scoring column from Edgewood and forced 21 turnovers on 10 steals to help secure the victory.
