SIOUX CENTER – Dordt bounced back from back to back losses over the last week to secure a win over the Morningside Mustangs on Wednesday night in Sioux Center.
Dordt took an early 15-5 lead in set one as five different Defenders had kills and Megan Raszler had an ace serve. Morningside rallied to within 20-18 after a Dordt attack error but Morningside returned the favor with an error of its won to get the score to 21-18. The Mustangs got no closer than three the rest o the set and Dordt won it on a block by Ally Krommendyk and Jori Bronner for the 25-20 final.
Set two was tight through out with the two teams tied 14 times up to 20-20. A Bronner kill followed by an Emily Feilmeier ace got Dordt up 22-20. A Karsyn Winterfeld kill made it 23-20 but Morningside rallied with back to back points. Leading 23-22 the Defenders got a Winterfeld kill and a Jessi De Jager kill for the final of 25-22.
Set three saw Dordt pull away from a 6-6 tie to lead 10-7 after a Corrina Timmermans kill. The lead eventually got to 15-11 with a Winterfeld kill but Morningside rallied to trim the difference to 18-17. Timmermans got another kill and a Morningside attack error got it to 21-18. Again the Mustangs got to within 21-20 but the Defenders answered with three straight with two by Winterfeld and a block by De Jager and Ava Van Soelen.
The Mustangs had one more rally and cut the gap to 24-23 but a tip kill by De Jager ended it for Dordt’s 16th win of the season.
Dordt had a 44-36 kill advantage and had a .214 kill efficiency while limiting Morningside to .140.
Dordt had a 10-3 points on blocks edge and had five ace serves to Morningside’s zero.
Karsyn Winterfeld had 14 kills and seven digs and handled 16 serve receive opportunities cleanly.
Ally Krommendyk had 10 kills and two block assists.
De Jager and Timmermans each had seven kills and De Jager was in on seven total blocks (one solo and six assists)
Megan Raszler had 33 assists and six digs.
Hannah Connelly got 17 digs and Feilmeier had 10.
Five different Defenders had one ace serve each.
The Mustangs were led by Krista Zenk with eight kills and Callie Alberico had 23 assists.
“This match was very important to keep our conference standing strong,” head coach Chad Hanson said. “We really had some good success at the net and created some pressure from the serve line. Our serve receive passing was consistent this evening and that created some offensive scoring in many positions.
“On this particular night through the ‘Sister to Sister’ event partnered with our local Promise Community Health Center, we honor and show support to women who have battled, are battling or will battle against breast cancer. We are grateful for the role that Promise plays in the lives of the women in our community.”
Dordt is now 16-8 overall and 7-5 in league play while Morningside goes to 6-7 in the GPAC and 14-9 overall.
Dordt will face the College of Saint Mary at home on Saturday afternoon with the JV match at 3:30 and varsity at 5:00. Morningside is scheduled to face Northwestern on Saturday.
