SIOUX CITY – Two-time defending National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ champion Morningside College led off the association’s top 10 presented by Street and Smith’s preseason college football publication, released earlier this month.
Head coach Steve Ryan’s Mustangs, the nine-time defending Great Plains Athletic Conference champions and riding a 29-game overall and 42-game conference win streak, had three student-athletes earn preseason All-American awards. Junior quarterback Joe Dolincheck (Bellevue, Neb.); senior running back Arnijae “AP” Ponder (Omaha, Neb.); and senior defensive lineman Seth Maitlen (Creston, Iowa) represented the Mustangs.
Dolincheck, a returning second team all-conference and Associated Press Little America selection, threw for better than 4,000 yards and 49 touchdowns in 2019; Ponder, who took over the program’s top spot in career rushing yards as part of gaining nearly 2,000 yards and reaching the end zone 23 times, gathered first team all-league and AP Little All-America accolades along with honorable mention NAIA All-American honors last season; and Maitlen, a first team all-conference and Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America first team academic all-district and All-American honoree, totaled 47 total sacks with 16 of them going for opponent losses and nine and a half being sacks during his junior campaign.
