DECORAH – No. 9 Wartburg women’s basketball secured the series sweep over Luther College Wednesday evening, defeating the Norse, 79-59, to improve to 10-2 during American Rivers Conference action.
The Knights jumped out to a 13-point lead after one quarter and didn’t look back, holding on to a lead throughout the contest. Wartburg shot nearly 50 percent from the field while limiting Luther to 34.4 percent shooting from the field and 20 percent from long range.
Four Knights scored in double figures, led by 16-point efforts each by Tori Hazard and Kaitlyn Volesky – season-highs for both. Emma Gerdes and Ally Conrad combined for 23 points while Gerdes led with five assists.
Near the midway point of the second quarter, the Orange & Black extended its advantage into the 20’s with a Katie Lindeman layup, and maintained at least an 18-point lead heading into the break.
Early into the fourth frame, the Norse trimmed the Wartburg lead to nine, capping off an 8-2 run to force an Orange & Black timeout. However, the Knights answered after the break with a three-pointer from Conrad and preserved at least a 12-point lead for the rest of the game.
