DES MOINES — The Grand View football team defeated the College of Idaho in the NAIA FCS quarterfinal game 14-6. Grand View improves to 13-0 and moves on to the semifinals next week. College of Idaho ends its season at 12-1.
The College of Idaho won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. The Coyotes would march down the field until the Grand View defense would come up with a timely sack to force the Coyotes to settle for a 41-yard field goal. This would be the only lead the Coyotes would have all afternoon 3-0. After a quarter of play, the score would stay the same 3-0, Coyotes.
Early in the second quarter, Brenden Flowers (JR/Chicago, IL) would intercept a pass and give the Vikings excellent field position. The Vikings would score two plays later on a Ben Ferkin (JR/Waukee, IA) pass that was caught by Anthony Turner(JR/Hartwell, GA) for a 5-yard touchdown. This gave the Vikings a 7-3 lead. Later in the second, the Vikings would go on a 7 play 44-yard drive capped off by a Jerry Lowe (SR/Tama, IA) touchdown to push the lead 14-6. The Vikings would go into halftime leading 14-6.
Early in the third quarter, the Coyotes would knock in another field goal to cut the lead 14-6, Vikings. Both defenses would hold the rest of the game, B. Flowers would intercept a second pass to kill a Coyote drive that was knocking on the goal line. The Vikings would hold on to win the game 14-6.
Jensen Gates (FR/Ankeny, IA) and Lowe would lead the Viking rushing attack. Gates would rush for 70-yards and Lowe would add 66-yards. Ferkin would throw for 74-yards and one touchdown. Jacob Lietz (SR/Colfax, IA) would catch two passes for 62-yards. Defensively, Ben Slavens (SR/Bettendorf, IA) would lead the charge with 15 total tackles. Pat Canby (JR/Mount Pleasant, IA) would lead the Vikings in solo tackles with 7 he finished with 12 total.
The Vikings move on to the semi-final round next Saturday to face Morningside.
