ELGIN, Ill. – The Warrior women’s basketball team got off to a slow start and never recovered, falling 77-49 to St. Ambrose on New Year’s Eve at the Judson Classic.
“We played a pretty solid three quarters today, we had major breakdowns in the second quarter that we could never full recover from,” Waldorf coach Katie Schutjer said.
Down 10-0 early in the first quarter, the Waldorf women battled back, getting as close as 12-7 down on a pair of McKenna Clouse free throws, and were down 19-14 on a Lizzie Garza layup, but could not complete the comeback.
The Bees led 21-14 at the first break, then broke away with a 21-0 run to start a he second quarter.
“Again, I’m proud of how they fought in the second half,” Schutjer said. “We have to find some offensive consistency and cohesiveness for a full 40 minutes.”
Tina Lair-VanMeter led Waldorf with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Nichole Oberthien added 11 points and four assists for the Warriors (0-7 overall, 0-1 NSAA) and who now return home to host Mayville State in league play on Jan. 8, at 5:30 pm at the Hanson Fieldhouse.
