NEW ORLEANS – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its NCAA & NJCAA Cross Country National Athletes of the Week Tuesday, Sept. 29, with Joe Freiburger representing Wartburg as the Division III Men’s Athlete of the Week.
Freiburger (Sr., Holy Cross) led Wartburg cross country to a first place finish during the Coe College Triangular in Cedar Rapids Sept. 26 and earned a second consecutive American Rivers Conference Runner of the Week award on Monday.
The Knights compiled a perfect score of 15 points for a second-straight meet while Freiburger ran the eight-kilometer race at Seminole Valley Park in 25 minutes, 18 seconds. He becomes the first Knight in Wartburg men’s cross country history to earn the USTFCCCA National Weekly Honor. Ashlyn Bagge, a 2018 Wartburg graduate, previously received the award on the women’s side in 2017.
Wartburg Cross Country returns to action Saturday, Oct. 10, hosting the Dan Huston Triangular at Max Cross Country Course, competing against Central and Simpson. The women’s race is scheduled for 12 p.m., followed by the men at 12:45 p.m.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to 12 collegiate cross country athletes, when applicable (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions and three NJCAA divisions).
